Director Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie, received his share of acclaim for his 2009 sci-fi effort Moon, which featured a bravura performance from Sam Rockwell. His sophomore effort, Source Code, centers on a soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) who repeatedly travels back in time to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. Both pictures are fascinating studies of a man’s intellectual and emotional journey through a vast and surreal landscape.

Jones knows a thing or two about traveling. “I grew up all over the world. I used to joke that I was Transatlantic eurotrash rather than English,” said Jones. “My father was traveling a lot. Because I was with him, I grew up in Switzerland, Berlin. I was in Tokyo for a while. I was in Sydney. I was in New York. Los Angeles. Scottsdale, Arizona. I was all over the place. I ended up in College of Wooster in Ohio. Went to graduate school in Nashville. Ended up in film school in London. I lived all over the place.”

Through his travels, Jones claims that learning the values of empathy have helped him grow as a filmmaker. “I think I’m good at empathizing,” added Jones. “I think that’s kind of my forte. It drives my girlfriend nuts because whenever she is mad at someone I can also see the other person’s side. I think it’s a useful tool when it comes to directing. You can get a sense on what a character is going through and how it might affect and how they might react. And you can use that to give actors extra options beyond the ones they may naturally come to.”
